New Zealand (1)

It was end of spring when we arrived at the amazing land of long white cloud--Aotearoa.  Day starts at 6am and dusk approaches at 8.30pm. Maximizing on the long daylight, we "self drive" for 2036 km in the South and 500 km in the North within 10 days.  The itinerary can be referred to the map below. It is worthwhile to explore the lakes/pools in NZ(refer to the following table for brief descriptions).

"Take only memories, leave nothing but footprints..."

Below shows some of the snapshots of our encounters in NZ.

Day 2 : Christchurch. No abnormality was detected until this photo was developed. Apparently, the 7.1 magnitude earthquake on 4th Sept has caused a damage to the beautiful architecture at Worcester Street.

Day 3 : Tranzalpine Train(from Christchurch Canterbury Plain to Greymouth passing through the Alps).  The 222km of Tranzalpine experience reaffirmed the slogan " No one can show you New Zealand like we can".

Day 3 : Franz Josef Glacier. The 2 hours walk under the drizzling and misty conditions has been memorable. We witnessed the traces Glacier passage(>thousands of years).

Day 4 : Matheson Lake. A 2 hours walk around the lake is a must. You may see parrots/Kakapo apart form the amazing reflection of the Mount Cook and Mount Tasman.

Day5 : Cardrona. The highest sealed road in New Zealand (used to be gold seeker path to Arrowtown). Unique yellowish mountain, strong wind and magnificent view looking down the valley.

Day 6 :  We had a cruise ride at the eighth wonder of the world--Milford Sound. We are lucky to see school of dolphins, seals and the rarely discovered penguin. Nice experience to get wet under the cool water fall.

Day 7 : An exciting and unforgettable bungy jump experience at the world oldest commercialized bungy jump site (Kawarau bridge). Picture shows the "moment of thrill" - leaving the platform to splash into the blueish green river.

Day 7 : Otago University at  Dunedin(The south hemisphere city with most Scottish heritage).
"Time out...resolute search for my space, my beginnings, my self...."

Day 8 : Moeraki Boulders. This photo was taken from a wall poster. The round boulders was formed in ancient sea floor sediments some 60 million years ago. It was uniquely grown via precipitation of the calcite taking 4-5.5 millions of years.

Day 8 : Lake Tekapo.  Colorful wild lupin flowers and the reddish reflection.

Day 9 : Houses built on the slope and greenery of hill can be seen in Wellington (So as Dunedin and Queenstown)

Day 10 : Waitomo and Aranui Cave.  A must visit to witness the mysterious glowworm lighting and how water and C02 gradually bring lives to growth of limestone structure.

Day 11 : A view from sky tower-Saying goodbye to the city of sails (Auckland) and New Zealand.
